ICC must probe Israeli crimes to pass litmus test for global justice system’s impartiality

Budour Hassan, a researcher for Israel and the Palestinian territories at Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera from Ramallah that the latest report by the organisation detailed “willful killings of civilians” and “willful infliction of suffering on civilians” by the Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank.

“These are war crimes in addition of the wider context which is apartheid, which is a crime against humanity. These are within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court,” she said, reiterating her organisation’s call on the ICC to probe Israel’s actions against the Palestinians.

The investigation would be a litmus test for the impartiality, objectivity and veracity of the international justice system, Hassan said.

She added that “we are marking two years since a case against Israel was opened at the International Criminal Court (ICC)”.

“We know that the jurisdiction was acknowledged by the court, but the ICC has been incredibly slow at actually investigating Israel’s violations.”
