German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call that a two-state solution is the “only sustainable solution to the conflict”, according to a statement from his spokesperson.
“From the view of the government, only a negotiated two-state solution would open up the prospect of a sustainable solution to the Middle East conflict. This must apply to both Gaza and the West Bank,” Scholz said.
Germany has been a staunch supporter of Israel, but Netanyahu has vehemently rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state in defiance of his Western allies.
