Schumer: U.S. will have to use its “leverage” if Netanyahu’s coalition continues “dangerous” policies.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Thursday warned that the United States may need to eventually shape Israeli policy due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing cabinet’s approach toward Palestinians.

“If Prime Minister Netanyahu’s current coalition remains in power after the war begins to wind down, and continues to pursue dangerous and inflammatory policies that test existing U.S. standards for assistance, then the United States will have no choice but to play a more active role in shaping Israeli policy by using our leverage to change the present course,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor.

Schumer called for a two-state solution, and argued that Netanyahu’s coalition was on a dangerous path. Schumer said if Israel takes over more of Gaza and the West Bank and creates a “de-facto single state,” there would be no reasonable expectation that Hamas and their allies will lay down arms — raising the prospect of constant war.

Schumer in his speech also called for new elections in Israel “once the war starts to wind down,” arguing that “Netanyahu has lost his way.”
